Why I Don't Respect Robert Byrd

Byrd and the Clan

And no, I don't forgive him because it was 60 years ago. Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms were out-and-out racists then too, and liberals never forgave them. Why should Byrd be any different?

Aristotle was fond of saying that you can't judge a person based on a single action. Instead, a person should be judged by the course of their life.

I don't know Byrd personally so won't claim to justify any of his actions. However, what differentiates Byrd, at least superficially, is that Helms and Thurmond were pretty racist publicly later in life--remember Helms' "Hands" commercial?

Forgiveness is a difficult thing to do. But without it, I'd be a very lonely person.
